On the week-end of 3rd and 4th July, to commemorate Ciaran’s first anniversary, Annacurra GAA Club play host to former team mates of the late Ciaran Shannon. Toronto Gaels from Canada, Coolera/ Strandhill from Sligo, former Sligo county players, former Wicklow county players and his Annacurra team mates will all take part in a sevens tournament for The Ciaran Shannon Cup. Teams start playing on Saturday afternoon, with the semi finals and finals being played on Sunday. On Sunday the younger members of Annacurra GAA Club will play U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-14 matches against Aughrim and Tinahely.
There are a number of other events happening over this week-end also, on Saturday afternoon the first sod will be turned in The Ciaran Shannon Walk, on Saturday night 3rd July there will be a function in Annacurra with music by local musician and former Annacurra footballer Tim Byrne and his band Elevator. Food is being provided by Wicklow Spitroast and promises to be a great night of entertainment. This will be a ticket only event, tickets go on sale this week and cost €10.
On Sunday there will be a parade of all the teams taking part starting at the church down to the football grounds, lead by the Aughrim Pipe Band. A plaque will be unveiled in Ciaran’s memory at the football grounds. On last year’s Lá na gclub, Ciaran was involved in the victorious seven a side team and we hope this year’s events will go some way to paying tribute to a great Annacurra man.
